Test your endurance against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls.
The Victoria Falls Marathon, now in its third year, is one of the most scenic races on earth. The prestigious race includes a marathon (42.2 kilometres), a half marathon (21.1 kilometres) as well as a fun run (5 kilometres). This endurance challenge is taking place on 29 August 2010 and is set to attract thousands of runners and spectators.
The scenic routeThe race starts at the Kingdom Hotel, near to the Victoria Falls, and leads the competitors across the Vic Falls Bridge where the spray from the Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) is sure to cool the runners down. The race continues along parts of the Zambezi River and the edge of the Zimbabwean mainland, where it leads into the Zambezi National Park. The route crosses international borders, into parts of Zambia, and then takes runners back into Zimbabwe, to the Victoria Falls Primary School field to cross the finishing line.
The scenic course is fast and fairly flat. Refreshment stations line the route along with thousands of cheerful spectators. The tranquil setting of the race is further enhanced by the most spectacular views of the Victoria Falls.
“Where else in the world do you have elephants at the water-points, and game on the race route, and the post-race party on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River,” said marathon promoter John Addison of Wild Frontiers.
Whether you are an athlete or simply a spectator, visit the Victoria Falls during the marathon period for an exciting line-up of sporting events and challenges. A cycling event is planned for the same weekend, along with the Zambezi rafting challenge.
